Abstract
Author-written2-Azetidinone, commonly referred to as β-lactam, is a small four-membered cyclic amide that has been the cornerstone of medicinal chemistry since its critical role has played in the development of β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams. The chemistry of 2-azetidinone is unique because of the high degree of ring strain on the four-membered structure of the lactam system, which leads to important chemical reactivity. This strain places the β-lactam ring at its most vulnerable position, making it highly susceptible to nucleophilic attack and hydrolysis by enzymes such as β-lactamases that contribute to antibiotic resistance. Chemical research on 2-azetidinones encompassing synthesis and functionalization has been done to discover new derivatives with better pharmacological properties. Traditionally used in antibacterial therapy, 2-azetidinone has proved to be a versatile scaffold with great potential for biological utility. A lot of studies have focused on the ability of 2-azetidinone derivatives to show a variety of therapeutic activities, such as anticancer, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. This motif can be heavily function-alized at different positions, which makes possible the structuring of new compounds with optimized pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles. Modifications of this type may alter the biological activity of the molecule and thereby make it operate in a more selective and potent way towards a wide range of biological targets. Studies on the biological potential of 2-azetidinone are very much on-going research; the chemical versatility and biological relevance have made it a focus for new treatments within many disease areas, such as oncology, virology, and inflammation. The present review is a comprehensive overview of its chemistry, synthesis, and rather broad-ranging biological potential within such fields, which will convince one of its ever-increasing value in modern drug discovery and development.

Introduction
2-Azetidinone or β-lactam is an N-substituted four-membered cyclic amide. It finds a significant role both in organic chemistry and in medicinal drug design. It is this critically strained ring itself, however, which underlies its such gigantic biological applications, especially in the development of antibiotics. The highly strained β-lactam ring is particularly reactive to nucleophilic attack-that is the basis of their broad biological activity. The principal structural theme of the β-lactam antibiotics, which include penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams, is 2-azetidinone. It has had a highly significant influence on the treatment of bacterial infections. The discovery and development of β-lactam antibiotics constitute one of the most important highlights in modern medicine: offering efficient therapy against an immense variety of pathogenic microorganisms. The biological potential of 2-azetidinone clearly extends far beyond its well-established role in antibacterial therapy. The chemical diversity of this compound makes it an excellent template for the construction of new therapeutics in different drug discovery areas. Structural derivations of 2-azetidinone led to finding derivatives with considerable pharmacological activities: anticancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal. The practicality of this drug design framework is located mainly in its ability to simultaneously interact with multiple biological targets. Advances in synthetic methodology have made possible an extension in the ability to functionalize the β-lactam ring at various positions, hence accessing a large amount of biologically active derivatives. The synthesis itself has opened ways for the study of 2-azetidinone activities in different areas of therapy. Examples include cancer-related research, where 2-azetidinone derivatives proved promising as inhibitors of enzymes involved in tumor growth and metastasis. Thus, antiviral derivatives have underlined to indicate the possibility of their utilization in the interest of anti-viral compounds because these could target particular mechanisms of viral replication. A study concerning 2azetidinone is the reflection of how important this molecule is in the development of antibiotics and its emerging role as a general scaffold for discovering drugs across broadly diverse therapeutic areas. This presentation provides an overview of the chemical properties, synthetic accessibility, and broad spectrum of biological potential of 2-azetidinone, combining all these elements to illustrate ongoing relevance in modern medicinal chemistry and its possible impact on future developments in drug discovery.

Theoretical Framework
This study on the chemistry and biological potential of 2azetidinone (β-lactam) takes its theoretical framework from some of the primary ideas found in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology. Chemical Reactivity and
Chemical Reactivity and
Structure-Activity Relationships (SAR):
The very high ring strain of the β-lactam is crucial to its reactivity, particularly making it susceptible to nucleophilic attacks and hydrolysis. But appreciating these chemical interactions is just as important for predicting how structural modification of the 2azetidinone may impact the biological activity. SAR studies can systematically probe the influence that structural alterations may have on the biological activities of 2-azetidinone derivatives. It will be known how modification in the functional group, in stereochemistry, as well as in the ring size, influences potency and selectivity of the compounds so that new derivatives could be rationally designed to possess better therapeutically relevant properties.
Drug Design Principles:
It comprises Drug design principles, which include pharmacophore identification, ligand-receptor interactions, and aspects of the shape and size of the molecule in terms of binding affinity. The concept of pharmacophore -the spatial arrangement of structural elements necessary for biological activity-is met by the strategy of designing 2azetidinone-based drugs; there, the choice of the kind of modification is directed by the need to maximize interactions between a drug and biological targets. The Lipinski's Rule of Five, which defines criteria for scoring a compound's drug-likeness, is also applied to determine the potential of the 2-azetidinone derivatives for drug discovery. These encompass molecular weight, lipophilicity, hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, and permeability across the membrane.
Biological Mechanisms
The theoretical framework will also involve knowledge of the biological mechanisms of action of derivatives of 2-azetidinone. These include target enzymes, receptors, and pathways associated with such diseases as bacterial infections, cancer, and viral infections. The interaction of 2-azetidinone derivatives with specific biological targets will be evaluated using biochemical assays, molecular docking studies, and cellular models to understand mechanisms of actions. In turn, understanding how 2-azetidinone derivatives can evade or inhibit these enzymes will be crucial in devising successful therapies against resistant bacterial strains. Therapy innovation as well as drug development The principles of therapeutic innovation and drug development will be placed in the framework.
Emphasis will be given to the process from lead compounds to clinically relevant drugs, including discussions of the phases of preclinical and clinical trial, regulatory aspects, and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics relevance in the appraisal of the efficacy and safety of 2-azetidinone-based drugs.
