Conservation agriculture practices for sustainable agronomic systems

Abstract

Conservation Agriculture (CA) encompasses a suite of farming practices designed to achieve sustainable, high-yielding cropping systems with minimal environmental impact. Its three pillars minimal soil disturbance (no-till or reduced tillage), permanent organic soil cover (mulch or cover crops) and diversified crop rotations-work synergistically to enhance soil health and system resilience. This analytical review surveys the technical principles, agronomic practices and evidence surrounding Conservation Agriculture globally. It examines how no-tillage and reduced tillage preserve soil structure and moisture, while cover cropping and residue retention protect soil from erosion and improve nutrient cycling. Crop rotation strategies (including legumes and alternative crops) are outlined with suitable regional examples. Integrated pest and nutrient management within Conservation Agriculture systems is discussed, emphasising reduced chemical inputs and enhanced biological cycles. Mechanization issues-from seed drills to innovative planters and socio-economic factors (farm size, labour, input costs, knowledge barriers) are analysed. This rigorous, data-driven analysis concludes that Conservation Agriculture offers a proven pathway to sustainable intensification, but its effective implementation requires tailored local strategies and supportive policies.
