Studies of the relationship between weather parameters and yield of Potato
Abstract
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a major food and industrial crop worldwide, valued for its adaptability and nutritional significance. In India, Surguja district of Chhattisgarh has emerged as an important potato-producing region due to its favorable climatic conditions. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between weather parameters and potato yield during 2020-2025 at the College of Horticulture and Research Station, Sitapur, Surguja. Monthly weather data, including minimum and maximum temperatures, relative humidity (morning and evening), sunshine hours, and rainfall, were correlated with vegetative growth parameters (plant height, leaf area, fresh and dry weight) and yield. Results revealed that maximum temperature negatively affected potato growth, while sunshine hours and minimum temperature positively influenced yield. Relative humidity showed both positive and negative correlations depending on the growth stage, and rainfall was positively associated with reproductive and maturity stages. Understanding these relationships provides valuable insights for optimizing resource use, improving productivity, and mitigating climate-related risks in potato cultivation.
