An in vitro study on cholesterol lowering activity of Allium sativum Q, 200C and Curcuma longa Q, 200C

Abstract

Background: In the present scenario, majority of the population is suffering from the lifestyle disorders like diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension etc. The antihyperlipidemic and atherosclerotic property of Allium sativum and Curcuma longa is known through various literatures and studies. The medicinal qualities of many herbal plants are unexplored. Objectives: This is a study to assess the in vitro antihyperlipidemic action of the Allium sativum and Curcuma longa on the erythrocyte membrane. Materials and Methods: A hyperlipidemic blood sample, split into six sections, was used for the investigation. Allium sativum and Curcuma longa were evaluated in two distinct potencies, and two controls one positive and one negative were employed. Spectrophotometry and the Liberman Burchard reagent were used to quantify cholesterol. Results: In a hyperlipidemic blood sample, the range of reduction of cholesterol concentration was from 25.7% to 4.0.3%. The range of reduction of cholesterol concentration in positive control (atorvastin) was 27.6%, Allium sativum Q was 32.7%, Allium sativum 200C was 26.7%, Curcuma longa 200C was 25.7%, Curcuma longa Q was 40.3%. The maximum effect was seen in Curcuma longa Q where the reduction was 40.3%. Conclusion: This study suggests that the Curcuma longa and Allium sativum might be useful for the management of hypercholesterolemia.
