Rhizopus stolonifer: A resilient postharvest invader and its growth dynamics on varied media
Abstract
Postharvest losses due to fungal infections pose a major challenge in agriculture, with Rhizopus stolonifer being a prominent culprit. This aggressive fungus rapidly colonizes fresh produce, causing Rhizopus soft rot and leading to significant spoilage. Understanding its growth dynamics is vital for developing effective control measures. This study examines the cultural characteristics of R. stolonifer on various solid and liquid media, focusing on mycelial expansion, sporulation, and biomass accumulation under controlled conditions. Five solid media-Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), Malt Extract Agar (MEA), Sabouraud’s Agar (SA), Czapek’s Dox Agar (CDA), and Richard’s Agar (RA)-were assessed for optimal growth. The fungus was also cultured in the liquid forms of these media to evaluate biomass production. Results revealed that PDA supported the most extensive radial growth and highest sporulation, indicating it as the most favourable medium for fungal development.
