A comparative study on nutritional status between agriculture worker and food grain loading and unloading worker of Nandigram at Purba Medinipur in West Bengal, India
Abstract
Nutrition plays a crucial role in determining the health, work capacity, and productivity of laborers, particularly in physically demanding occupations. The present study was conducted to assess and compare the nutritional status of two groups of workers—agricultural workers and food grain loading and unloading workers—from Tarapakha and Boyal areas of Nandigram, Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal. A total of 200 male subjects aged between 30-40 years were selected, comprising 100 agricultural workers and 100 food grain handling workers. Anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), and Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) were recorded to evaluate physical status. Biochemical parameters including hemoglobin concentration and fasting blood glucose levels were also measured. Dietary intake data were collected using a seven-day food record method, and the average daily intake of energy, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats was calculated using the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) food composition database. The study aimed to identify differences in nutritional status, dietary intake, and health indicators between the two occupational groups engaged in heavy physical labor. Results indicated variations in nutrient intake and anthropometric characteristics among the workers, reflecting differences in occupational workload, dietary habits, and socio-economic conditions. Many workers showed marginal nutritional status and moderate hemoglobin levels, indicating a risk of nutritional deficiencies.The findings highlight the importance of adequate dietary intake and nutrition education for laborers engaged in physically demanding work. Improving nutritional status through balanced diets and health awareness programs may enhance work efficiency, physical capacity, and overall well-being of workers in rural communities.
