Length-weight relationships, growth patterns, and condition factors of Channa striata from western and eastern Sumatra, Indonesia
Abstract
Length–weight relationships (LWR), growth patterns, and condition factors are essential biological parameters for understanding population structure and supporting sustainable fisheries management. This study examined the LWR and relative condition factor of Channa striata from inland waters of western and eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. A total of 300 specimens were collected from West Sumatra and Riau Province. Total length and body weight were measured for males, females, and combined populations. The LWRs were highly significant ($p<0.001$), with strong correlations ($R^2 = 0.75-0.97$). Fish from Riau exhibited larger body sizes, while West Sumatra showed positive allometric growth ($b > 3$). Conversely, Riau populations showed negative allometric growth in males and near-isometric growth in females. Relative condition factor values (1.00-1.23) indicated spatial variation in body condition. These findings provide critical biological evidence to support region-specific fisheries management and sustainable aquaculture development of Channa striata in Sumatra.
