Study of frustration tolerance in male athletes of varying levels of socio-economic status

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of socio-economic status on frustration tolerance in male athletes. A sample of 120 interuniversity male athletes was selected from universities operating in Chhattisgarh. The sample includes 40 male interuniversity athletes from low socioeconomic status, 40 male interuniversity athletes from average socioeconomic status and 40 male interuniversity athletes from high socioeconomic status. The age of the selected sportspersons was between 18 and 25 at the time of selection. The sample selection was based on the purposive sampling method. To assess the socio-economic status of selected interuniversity athletes, a scale prepared by Sunil Kumar Upadhyay (2019) was used. while the frustration tolerance in interuniversity athletes was assessed by the Reactions to Frustration Scale prepared by Dixit and Shrivastava (2011). The effect of socio-economic status on frustration tolerance in male interuniversity athletes on their frustration tolerance was clearly seen with F=8.38 being statistically significant at 0.05 level, indicating that frustration tolerance in male interuniversity athletes from high, middle and low socio-economic status does vary. The frustration tolerance in male athletes from high socio-economic status (Mean = 52.1) was significantly better than that of male athletes from middle (Mean = 58.62) and low socio-economic status (Mean = 61.07). The mean difference of -6.52 and -8.97 proves the above at p<0.05. The frustration tolerance in male athletes from middle SES athletes was better than that of male athletes from low SES, although the mean difference of -2.45 did not support it statistically. Based on result and discussion, the researchers conclude that socio economic variable is a powerful demographic factor that affects frustration tolerance in male athletes and need to be considered while preparing a psychological training plan to suit the requirements of male athletes coming from a wide range of socioeconomic status.
