Individualized homoeopathic management of nocturnal enuresis in an adolescent using Kent’s repertory: A case report

Abstract

Background - Nocturnal enuresis (NE) remains a prevalent clinical challenge throughout childhood and adolescence, that often carries a heavy emotional burden, impacting their self-esteem and daily happiness. While standard treatments—like bed alarms or medication—are the usual go-to solutions, they don't always provide a permanent fix. Many families find that once the medication stops, the problem returns, leading to a cycle of frustration. Homoeopathy adopts an individualized and holistic approach, focusing on the patient as a whole rather than merely addressing the presenting symptom. This individualized approach considers a child's specific personality, fears, and physical triggers to find a remedy that fits their unique situation, aiming for a more natural and lasting recovery. Case Summary - A 13-year-old male presented with complaints of nocturnal enuresis since childhood, characterized by involuntary urination during sleep, predominantly in the early part of the night and associated with nocturnal vocalization. Developmental milestones were normal, and immunization was up to date. He was very shy and timid and demonstrated clingy behaviour with marked attachment to his mother. Based on individualization and Repertorial analysis using Kent’s Repertory, Pulsatilla was selected. Intervention: Pulsatilla 200C, three doses, followed by Saccharum lactis for 15 days Outcome: There was a significant decrease in the frequency of nocturnal enuresis, which ultimately resolved completely during the follow-up period. Conclusion: This case underscores the significant role of emotional factors in adolescent nocturnal enuresis and illustrates the therapeutic effectiveness of individualized homoeopathic prescribing based on Kent’s principles.
