Dental Application of Indigenous Medicinal Herbs in Himachal Pradesh: A Review

Abstract

For centuries, herbal medicines have served as fundamental component of traditional healthcare systems. Himachal Pradesh, with its rich biodiversity, is in the western Himalayas, and is home to a diverse range of medicinal plants traditionally used for oral and dental health care by local and tribal communities. This review explores key herbs indigenous to Himachal Pradesh and their applications in dentistry and examines how these traditional herbs correlate with known antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Plants such as Zanthoxylum armatum, Vitex negundo, Plumbago zeylanica, Berberis lycium, and Curcuma aromatica are known for their bioactive constituents including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and essential oils that demonstrate antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound-healing properties. These therapeutic properties are especially valuable for preventing and managing prevalent oral conditions such as gingivitis, periodontitis, dental caries, bad breath, and oral ulcers. Analysis of each herb’s phytochemistry, pharmacological actions, and traditional uses provides insights into their potential for development into modern dental therapeutics. The review concludes that these medicinal plants offer promising opportunities for cost-effective, natural oral healthcare solutions and warrant further research in the form of clinical trials and product development.
