JINJA™ herbal mixture (JHM) ameliorates complications associated with diet induced Hyperlipidemia in Wistar rats

Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and is commonly induced by excessive dietary fat intake. The present study evaluated the potential of JINJA™ Herbal Mixture (JHM), a polyherbal decoction composed of Carpolobia alba, Cnestis ferruginea, and Heliotropium indicum to alleviates high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic Wistar rats. In the study, rats were divided into five groups and fed either a normal diet or HFD, with treatment groups receiving JINJA (200 or 300 mg/kg) or Orlistat for four weeks. Body weight, food intake, anthropometric and adiposity indices, glucose levels, creatine kinase, lipid profile, liver function enzymes, and oxidative stress markers were evaluated. HFD-fed rats showed significant increases in body weight, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, VLDL-C, serum glucose, creatine kinase, and malondialdehyde, along with reduced HDL-C and antioxidant enzyme activities. Treatment with JHM significantly and dose-dependently improved lipid profile, reduced cardiovascular risk indices, normalized glucose and creatine kinase levels, and restored antioxidant defenses in liver and heart tissues. The effects of the higher JINJA dose were comparable to those of Standard Orlistat. These findings demonstrate that JHM exerts significant potential to alleviate hyperlipidemia in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed Wistar rats and may represent a promising natural therapeutic agent for the management of Hyperlipidemia.
