A Retrospective study on efficacy of homoeopathic medicines on atopic dermatitis
Abstract
Background: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) also known as atopic eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition associated with epithelial, immune and environmental factors. AD affects adults and children with worldwide prevalence rates of 1-20%. The prevalence of AD seems to have reached a plateau around 20% in countries with the highest prevalence, suggesting that AD may not be on a continued rise but that a finite number of individuals may be susceptible to the condition. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in the prognosis of atopic Dermatitis cases within 6 months to 1 year. To compare the effectiveness of various homoeopathic medicines and various potencies on prognosis of Atopic Dermatitis cases on various criteria. Methodology: Study conducted on 60 patients below the age of 40 at Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College between 2020 and 2024, the study assessed prognosis within 6 months to 1 year after treatment, based on symptomatology of patient. Result: Out of these 60 cases, 44 cases has been found symptomatic improvement within 6 months to 1 year, as these cases showed gradual improvement in the form of reduced discolouration of skin, reduced itching, reduced discharge of the affected area. The medicines that showed improvement are Sulphur (12 cases), then Natrum muriaticum (7 cases) and Calcarea carbonica (7 cases), then Sepia (4 cases), then Arsenicum album (3 cases), Silicea (3 cases), Tuberculinum (3 cases), Mercurius solubilis, Myristica, Phosphorus, Arsenicum iodatum, Medorrhinum shows improvement of 1 case each. Among these Sulphur shows more improvement. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study supports the potential role of homoeopathy in managing atopic dermatitis effectively and safely, calling for more rigorous, prospective, controlled trials to substantiate these findings further.
