Studies on genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance in sweet potato genotypes for yield and yield components

Abstract

The present experiment was carried out in twenty genotypes of sweet potato to study the genetic variability, heritability and potential for screening suitable genotypes for future improvement programmes. The genotypes exhibited significant differences for all the traits under study. High magnitude of genotypic as well as phenotypic coefficient of variations were recorded for traits viz., length of internodes, weight of vine per plant, length of tuber and high phenotypic coefficient of variations in Vine length and marketable tuber weight per plant indicating high variability available in the germplasm for these characters for further improvement. The highest heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was recorded for the characters length of internodes followed by weight of vine per plant, length of tuber, marketable tuber weight per plant, tuber weight per plant, petiole length, total yield (t/ha), vine length and length of peduncle indicated these characters had additive gene effect and therefore, these are more reliable for effective selection.
