Hematological and biochemical evaluation of effect of Mangiferin in Amitraz induced toxicity in rats

Abstract

The present study was conducted to assess the protective role of mangiferin against amitraz-induced toxicity in female wistar rats. Forty rats were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 8): Group I (normal control), Group II [amitraz, 80 mg/kg] Group III (mangiferin, 30 mg/kg), Group IV (amitraz + mangiferin, 30 mg/kg), and Group V (amitraz + mangiferin, 60 mg/kg). Exposure to amitraz alone caused significant reductions in body weight gain, hematological indices, TEC and Hb along with a significant increase in liver and kidney function biomarkers (ALT, AST, ALP, BUN and creatinine) lipid peroxidation and total leukocyte count (TLC). Co-administration of mangiferin, particularly at a dose of 60 mg/kg, significantly mitigated amitraz-induced toxic effects by restoring hematological and biochemical parameters and reducing tissue damage. In conclusion, mangiferin demonstrated notable neuroprotective, hepatoprotective and nephroprotective effects against amitraz-induced toxicity suggesting its potential therapeutic value in managing pesticide-induced oxidative stress and toxicity in animals.
