A Mini Review of Ethiopia's Swine Industry (2016-2026): Progress, Challenges, and Future Prospects

International Journal of Agriculture and Food Science · 2026 · Vol. 8(2) · pp. 398–402

Abstract

Ethiopia's swine industry represents a small yet evolving component of the nation's agricultural sector, operating within a complex landscape shaped by cultural, religious, and economic factors. Over the past decade (2016-2026), the country has witnessed gradual developments in pig farming practices, policy frameworks, and market dynamics, despite persistent challenges that continue to constrain substantial growth. This mini review examines the evolution of Ethiopia's swine industry, analyzing production trends, major constraints, policy developments, and future prospects. The review reveals that while the pig population has maintained an estimated 2-3 million head, representing approximately 6-7% of Africa's total pig population, the industry remains predominantly characterized by smallholder, extensive production systems. Key challenges including African Swine Fever outbreaks, feed scarcity, limited market access, and cultural restrictions on pork consumption continue to shape the industry's trajectory. Government initiatives and international research partnerships have contributed to incremental improvements, yet significant investment in veterinary services, feed infrastructure, and value chain development remains essential for sustainable growth. The findings suggest that the Ethiopian swine industry will continue to serve niche markets, particularly among expatriate communities and urban consumers, while facing inherent limitations imposed by religious and cultural factors.
