Phytochemical Screening and Investigation of Selected Medicinal Plants Used in Traditional Medicine
Abstract
Medicinal plants are a rich source of bioactive compounds called phytochemicals, which have been traditionally used in treating various human ailments. This study aims to conduct both qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening of selected medicinal plants—Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), Azadirachta indica (Neem), Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), and Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy). For centuries, medicinal plants have been the foundation of traditional healthcare systems, especially in India, where Ayurveda continues to hold a significant place. This research focuses on the phytochemical screening and analysis of these widely used plants in traditional Indian medicine. Aqueous and methanolic extracts of these plants were prepared and subjected to qualitative as well as quantitative phytochemical tests. Standard procedures were followed to detect the presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and phenolic compounds. The results showed a notable presence of multiple phytochemicals known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial properties. These findings support the ethnomedicinal uses of these plants and highlight their potential as sources for developing new therapeutic agents. Further pharmacological and clinical studies are recommended to fully explore their therapeutic capabilities.
