Surgical Management of Canine Mammary Tumour in a Female Dog: A Case Report

Abstract

A 7 year old female German Shepherd dog presented with a firm, palpable mass located on the left inguinal mammary gland. The mass measured approximately 5 cm in diameter and had shown progressive enlargement over recent weeks. Clinical examination and diagnostic evaluation suggested a mammary neoplasm. Upon clinical evaluation, all physiological parameters were found to be within normal limits, the patient was suitable for general anaesthesia. The animal was anaesthetised with Atropine Sulphate @ 0.02mg/kg body weight, IM and Xylazine @ 1mg/kg body weight, IM, Ketamine @ 5mg/kg body weight, IV. The mass was aseptically excised by lumpectomy. Surgical wound was closed with standard suture patterns. Post operatively, the animal was treated with antibiotic and analgesic therapy. Skin sutures were removed on 10th day post-surgery and the patient recovered uneventfully, without any complication.
