Performance and adaptability of Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) Cultivars under protected growing conditions in Northern Kashmir
Abstract
A comparative evaluation of eight carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) cultivars Diana, Aurturo, White Dona, Pink Dona, Soto, Red King, Tuareg and Dona was conducted under protected greenhouse conditions in Northern Kashmir to assess their growth performance, flower yield and post-harvest quality attributes. Uniform agronomic and cultural practices were followed throughout the experimental period. Significant varietal differences were observed for all the parameters studied, indicating strong genotype-dependent responses under protected cultivation. Among the cultivars evaluated, cv. Red King exhibited superior performance, recording the maximum number of branches per plant (8.6), flowers per plant (38.9), fresh flower weight (9.12 g), dry flower weight (2.84 g), flower diameter (8.12 cm) and vase life (31.6 days). Cultivars Tuareg and Pink Dona also showed comparatively better performance for certain quality attributes. The results clearly demonstrate that cultivar selection plays a decisive role in optimizing productivity and flower quality under greenhouse conditions. Based on overall performance, cv. Red King was identified as the most suitable cultivar for commercial carnation production under medium-technology protected greenhouse conditions in Northern Kashmir.
