Bio-efficacy of some botanicals against Brown plant hopper, (Nilaparvata lugens Stal) on Aromatic Rice (Cultivar: Tulaipanji) in Old Alluvial Zone, west Bengal, India

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Regional Research Station, Old Alluvial Zone, Dakshin Dinajpur district, West Bengal during kharif season in two consecutive year 2021-22 and 2022-23. The botanicals products were collected from different locations of the district and prepared water suspension for final spray as per prefixed concentration. The cumulative data of consecutive two years 2021-22 and 2022-23 was presented to mean value of DMRT (P < 0.05) of brown plant hopper, (Nilaparvata lugens Stal) population. Among all treatments, the check treatment (T9) was found significantly superior against brown plant hoppers (BPH). It was recorded lowest mean value of hoppers in both 1st and 2nd year (2.23 ±0.38a) and (2.20 ±0.40a) respectively. However, among the treatment of plant products, T2 (8.23 ±0.32b) and T5 (8.17 ±0.51b) was showed significantly better than other treatments against BPH in 1st year and similar effects was observed at T2 (7.73 ±0.35b) in the second year. Treatments T1, T4, T6, T7 and T8 were observed similar efficacy during 1st year the mean value was (9.03 ±0.74bc), (8.70 ±0.56bc), (8.93±0.42bc), (8.80 ±0.20bc) and (8.93 ±0.31bc) respectively. But, treatment efficacy of T1, T4, and T6 was showed consistency against hoper population reduction about 40 to 60 percent in both 1st and 2nd year. With respect of yield (T9), Dinotefuran 20%SG @ 30gm a.i./ha was recorded highest yield of (2.95 ±0.06f) ton per hector followed by (T2), NSKE at 5% concentration (2.58 ±0.09e) ton per hector. All the other treatments recorded significantly lower yields and were found to be at per with each other but significantly good over control. The use of botanical pesticides are good for animals including natural enemies due to minimal toxicity, no risk of developing pest resistance, economical, safe to environment and easy availability. So, that the plant extracts may be utilized as an alternative to chemical insecticides especially in aromatic rice and organic rice production system for the management of brown plant hoppers.
