Immunological diagnosis of canine atopic dermatitis with allergen specific serum IgE test and comparison with skin prick test

Abstract

This study was conducted with the objective to diagnose the atopic dermatitis through allergen serum specific IgE. Allergen specific serum IgE test was done for two allergens D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus. Out of 111 serum samples tested for D. farinae, 54 samples (48.6%) were positive and out of 108 samples tested for D. pteronyssinus 46 samples (42.5%) were positive. 24 of the 111 serum samples were subjected with skin prick test done. Out of which 14 showed positive reaction with SPT and 19 were positive for IgE antibody through ELISA. 6 dogs which were used for SPT and ELISA were further subjected to IDT. Five of the dogs were positive on ELISA and three were positive on IDT and one of it was positive for SPT. It was concluded that serum IgE was a more reliable test and a combination of either SPT or IDT with ELISA can be used to confirm the diagnosis.
