Effectiveness of homoeopathic treatment in hypothyroidism: A retrospective study

Abstract

Background: Hypothyroidism is a prevalent endocrine disorder characterized by deficient thyroid hormone production. Despite lifelong hormone replacement being the standard of care, many patients seek complementary therapies, particularly Homoeopathy, for a holistic and side-effect-free approach. Objective: To assess the clinical effectiveness of individualized Homoeopathic treatment in patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism through a retrospective analysis. Methodology: A retrospective study was conducted on 50 patients with hypothyroidism treated at Sarada Krishna homoeopathic medical college and hospital OPD from January 2021 to December 2023. TSH levels before and after treatment were compared. Symptomatic improvement and changes in hormone levels were analyzed. Results: 70% of patients showed significant clinical improvement, and 58% had a marked reduction in TSH values. The most commonly prescribed remedies were Sepia, Lycopodium, Calcarea carbonica, and Natrum muriaticum, individualized according to totality of symptoms. Conclusion: Individualized Homoeopathic treatment appears to be effective in managing hypothyroid cases, with improvements in both clinical symptoms and biochemical markers. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to establish efficacy.
