Knowledge, attitude and practice of usage of calcium silicate based cements among general dentists and dental specialists in Tamil Nadu population: A questionnaire survey

Abstract

Background: Repair and Regeneration is always a new horizon in the field of dentistry. Traditionally, calcium hydroxide cement was commonly used to promote mineralization and tissue regeneration. But its use is reduced due to prolonged setting time, reduced strength, tunnel defects etc. Hence, a new era of calcium-silicate based cements is introduced in areas of pulp capping, apexification, apical surgeries and revascularization. They have superior sealing ability, bioactivity and marginal adaptability making them applicable for various dental treatments. Though calcium-silicate based cement is available in markets today, studies regarding its knowledge among dental practitioners is questionable. Hence, this survey is conducted to evaluate the awareness and usage of calcium-silicate based cements among general dentists. Aim: This survey was to evaluate the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of use of calcium-silicate based cements among general dentists in Tamil Nadu population. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional closed end web-based survey formulated in English consisting of 20 structured questions was sent to general dentists and various dental specialists in districts of Tamil Nadu. A link to the online questionnaire was circulated through social media platform and responses were collected, statistically analyzed. Results: 65.53% reported that calcium silicate cement offered greater benefits than calcium hydroxide, however lesser usage was observed due to affordability. Conclusion: Despite greater awareness regarding the benefit, the affordability was a major concern which resulted in lesser usage of calcium silicate-based cement in the clinical scenario.
