Virtual Reality v/s Conventional therapy for balance in neurological disorders

Abstract

This review explores the comparative efficacy of virtual reality (VR) therapy and conventional physiotherapy in enhancing balance among individuals with neurological disorders such as stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. A systematic review of 15 randomized controlled trials published between 2015 and 2024 was conducted using databases like PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Results indicate that VR-based interventions lead to statistically significant improvements in balance, functional mobility, and motivation compared to traditional methods. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG), and 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT) were primary outcome measures. The findings suggest that VR can be a powerful adjunct to traditional rehabilitation, though standardized protocols and long-term efficacy studies remain necessary.
