The treatment of women in Indian English literature

Abstract

This research article focuses on the women as treated by the English writers of India in colonial times as well as the period post-colonial times, the theme being twilight. The issue is researched by presenting explanations by different people such as RK Narayan, Toru Dutt, Kamala Das, AK Ramanujan, Nissim Ezekiel, Jayanta Mahapatra, Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao, Rabindranath Tagore, and many more. It investigates the formation of female characters, related foiling or empowering agency, and specific socio-cultural forces shaping their fates. The themes analyzed by the study comprise tradition against modernity, domestic confinement, societal expectations, female sexuality, and quests for identity, emphasizing the complex interaction of patriarchal frameworks and emerging women's voices seeking self-expression. Its focal point is showing the contradiction between significant views based on the fact social is occasionally critiqued by the narrators on the one hand and, on the other hand, conveying the strength, independence, and hope of Indian female society for the prospect of the final turn making the understanding of the gender dynamics in India more profound and deeper.
