Prevalence and genetic basis of high-level aminoglycoside and fluoroquinolone resistance in enterococcus isolates from urinary tract infections in Dhaka, Bangladesh (July 2022-June 2023)

Journal of Advances in Microbiology Research · 2025 · Vol. 6(1) · pp. 293–298

Abstract

This study investigated high-level aminoglycoside and fluoroquinolone resistance in Enterococcus isolates from urinary tract infections (UTIs) at a tertiary care hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, between July 2022 and June 2023. Out of 37 identified Enterococcus species, mostly Enterococcus faecalis, 62.16% were multidrug-resistant. Significant resistance was observed for gentamicin (54.05%) and ciprofloxacin (59.46%), though all isolates were susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid. High-level gentamicin resistance (HLGR) was present in 48.65% of isolates, with the aac(6’)-Ie-aph(2
