A Pre-experimental study to assess the effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program on knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking among students of Rayat Bahra University, Mohali

Abstract

Background: Tobacco smoking is aleading cause of preventable disease and death worldwide. Early tobacco use islinked to impaired lung function, increased risk of cancer, and long-termdependence. This study investigates the effectiveness of a structured teachingprogram in improving awareness of the harmful effects of cigarette smokingamong students.Aimof study: The aim of the studywas to improve the knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking amongstudents in selected schoolof Rayat Bahra University, District Mohali, Punjab.Designand Methods:A Quantitativeresearch approach and Pre-experimental research design with one group pre-testpost-test was used to conduct the study. Total Sample 150 students were takenwith purposive sampling technique. Self-structured Questionnaire was used fordata collection. Structured teaching program through lecture-cum-discussion wasgiven after pre-test. Analysis was done by using descriptive and inferentialstatistics to find the association of pre- test knowledge scores. Results:The study findingsrevealed that in pre-test and post-test knowledge mean score and standarddeviation was 12.40±2.273 and18.82±1.757 respectively. Mean difference betweenpre test and post test knowledge score was 6.42. The paired t-test was used inthe analysis and calculated values was 29.64, which is more than the tablevalue which was 1.98 at 0.05 level of significance with degree of freedom 149.Hence, Structured teaching programme is found to be effective. Out of all onlyone socio demographic variable was associated with pre-test knowledge scorewhich was Religion as chi square test was 15.093 which was more than the tablevalue of degree of freedom at 0.05 level of significance 12.529. This studyconcluded that post-test knowledge scores were greater than pre-test knowledgescores regarding among students of Rayat Bahra University, Mohali. It revealsthat planned teaching program was effective.
