A study to assess the effectiveness of competency based teaching on prevention of neonatal hypothermia among staff nurses in selected hospital at Chennai

Abstract

A new born baby is a God`s divine precious gift given to the mother. Nurses plays a very crucial role in prevention of neonatal hypothermia during the hospitalization of new born in NICU. Hypothermia is the major causes which increases the morbidity and mortality rate in new born in the developing countries. Lack of knowledge and handling of neonates during hypothermia among nurses increases the risk of morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of competency-based teaching on prevention of neonatal hypothermia among staff nurses. A pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test research design was adopted for the study among 30 staff nurses were selected using purposive sampling technique. Semi structured questionnaire was used to assess the level of knowledge and observational check list was used to assess the level of practice regrading prevention of neonatal hypothermia. Competency-based teachings session on prevention of neonatal hypothermia includes optimal thermal environment, the warm chain, and the warm chain at home was taken by video assisted teaching and demonstration to the staff nurses for about 45 minutes which was followed by the post-test. The study findings showed that the pre-test on knowledge and practice mean score was 16.43 and 12.0 respectively with standard deviation of 2.53 and 2.46 in each variable. And post-test knowledge and practice mean score were 24.20 and 22.10 with standard deviation of 2.53 and 2.29 respectively. The paired `t` value was 15.610 and 19.363 which revealed that there was a highly statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge and practice at p<0.05.
