Seasonal dynamics of leaf webber and capsule borer of sesame and their management using new-generation insecticides
Abstract
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is a globally significant oilseed crop, with India contributing nearly 17% of the world’s total production. This research investigated the seasonal occurrence of major insect pests affecting sesame crops in Odisha and evaluated the effectiveness of modern insecticides in controlling these pests. The study was carried out in the summer of 2022 at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, employing a Randomized Block Design. Key pests examined included the leaf webber and capsule borer. Findings indicated that despite sesame’s high nutritional value, pest attacks can lead to yield losses of up to 90%. Of the insecticides tested, Emamectin benzoate demonstrated the highest efficacy, reducing capsule damage by 59.07%, highlighting its potential in integrated pest management strategies.
