Comparison of prescribing antibiotics for outpatients in Bangladesh: A cross-sectional health study in the southern region of Dhaka City

Abstract

Increasing antibiotic use and drug resistance have caused a sharp rise in the number of doctors prescribing antibiotics globally. With the advent of numerous medicines, the effects of bacterial infections have been reduced. The antibiotic being investigated is used to treat infections brought on by bacteria as well as protozoa, parasites, and fungi. Prescriptions and in-person interviews with patients who received at least one antibiotic prescription throughout the study period were used to gather data. A total of 250 prescriptions were analysed during the study period. It was found that the Physician prescribed antibiotics to the patients who were suffering mainly from pneumonia, meningitis, bronchiolitis, fever, infections, diarrhoea, COPD and gonorrhoea. Male were prescribed 59% antibiotics than female. The average highest prescribed antibiotic groups in the South city were Cephalosporins for 34% patients. Highest percentage of patients (100%) visited MBBS doctors in many hospitals, where the MBBS doctors found easily. Our survey-based research also reveals that significant percentage of patients receiving antibiotics in Bangladesh which is relevant to the reports on antibiotic usages in other parts of Asia, Europe or America because antibiotics are considered as the second most prescribed drugs in the world.
